32 Core Threadripper 2 2990X & 2950X, now Supported in ASRock, Gigabyte, MSI X399 BIOS
AMD motherboard manufacturers like ASRock, Gigabyte and MSI have just started supporting the new BIOS revisions for X399-based motherboards to bring support for AMD’s long expected Threadripper 2 or Threadripper 2000-series processors.
Ryzen Threadripper processors are expected to be out sometime in the third quarter of this year and based on Rumor, AMD will launch the new processors on August 13. With the recent large release of X399 BIOSes with updated microcode to support Threadripper 2 processors, that rumor could have some truth to it.
Threadripper 2 processors, based on AMD’s Zen+ design, employ GlobalFoundries’ 12nm fabrication process. Therefore, the new processors should ship with noticeable improvements, such as higher frequencies and lower memory latency, than their predecessors. Threadripper 2 processors retain the chipmaker’s 4,094-pin TR4 socket and will work without hiccups on existing X399 motherboards on the market as long as the motherboard has the latest BIOS update.
The chip is expected to feature a base clock of 3.4 GHz and a maximum boost clock of 4.0 GHz while the precision boost overdrive clocks are rated at +200 MHz so expect up to 4.20 GHz in single core optimized workloads. 16 MB of L2 and 64 MB of L3 cache which rounds up to a total of 80 MB of available cache on a single chip. The TDP of the chip as stated before will be kept at 250W and all current generation TR4 socketed boards will be fully compatible with the 2nd generation Ryzen Threadripper processors. Ryzen Threadripper 2990X at around $1500 US offers better architecture based on a 12nm process, 14 more cores, 28 more threads and for $500 less since the i9 costs a grand $2000 US. Comparing it to the Ryzen Threadripper 1950X, we get 16 more cores, 32 more threads, faster clocks at just $500 US more. According to the retailer price, AMD may not be taking the price to a higher premium and charging about 50% more than the 1950X.
