Don’t buy a Nvidia or AMD GPU right now
GPU prices have skyrocketed
In 2017 PC gaming’s biggest enemy was microtransactions and crypto mining. If you are a gamer you will know why microtransactions was a big enemy but if you aren’t a PC gamer or you don’t know a lot about PC hardware you probably don’t know about the crypto mining problem. PC gamers didn’t like crypto miners because miners buy more than 4 GPUs at a time some even buy 8 graphics cards so retailers ran out of these GPUs very fast and gamers couldn’t get their hands on them.
Since December 4th Amazon ran out of RX vega 64. Since then the RX Vega 64 has been out of stock on Amazon and around the same date, it was out of stock in all the other retailers. Right now if a gamer wants to get their hands on an RX Vega 64 they will have to pay $1,099.99 even though the RX Vega 64 is supposed to cost only $600. On Amazon, the RX Vega 64 price went up to $1,499.99 on Dec 12, 2017, on Amazon. Unfortunately, the same thing happened with Nvidia’s GPUs. The Asus GTX 1080 a card that is supposed to cost around $600 reached $1,793 new. Right now if you want to build a PC pre-built is probably the best route or you can wait a little bit.
Nvidia requested retailers to set a limit of 2 graphics cards to each customer but they can’t force retailers to do that so Nvidia set up their own online store. In the store, gamers can buy only 2 Graphics Cards instead of an unlimited amount. Gamers don’t need more than 2 GPUs because some games don’t even support 2 GPUs and no game supports more than 2 GPUs. Nvidia said, “For NVIDIA, gamers come first. All activities related to our GeForce product line are targeted at our main audience. To ensure that GeForce gamers continue to have good GeForce graphics card availability in the current situation, we recommend that our trading partners make the appropriate arrangements to meet gamers’ needs as usual.”
