AMD & NVIDIA, Mining Cryptocurrencies Is Changing GPU Market Demands
If the Meltdown and Spectre effects on AMD, Intel and Nvidia chips has not been seen in the reports yet, the cryptocurrency mining effects will be seen soon.
The main question is how AMD and Nvidia are going to answer the new type of demands by the market? these new set of costumers dont care about the brand or design, frame rate or 4k support. The only thing they care is more hash rate by lower power consumption. AMD and Nvidia have not seen such a thing till 2017 and still after a year there have been no answer to the new needs of the mining GPU market.
Analysts shows the popularity of mining drove sales of graphics chips from AMD and Nvidia Corp. NVDA, +2.95% more than the companies were letting on in the fourth quarter. As cryptocurrency mining moves from hobbyist systems to enterprise-level mining systems, the future of graphics-chip demand changes while also the mining systems are moveing toward a more software-based approach. AMD or sure will factor any doubts about future crypto-mining sales into its forecast while having concerns about the Spectre battle in the new reports.
“The gaming market remains a priority for AMD and gamers are a primary focus across our GPUs, CPUs and semi-custom game console products,” a representative from AMD told the outlet. But how much the whole graphics market is going to change by all the new behaviors that we are seeing by the new range of graphics buyers?
One interesting thing to point out is that according to CNBC report, it is the fickle nature of the crypotmining scene; “[B]uyers tend to flee as soon as profitability wanes as they do not have any brand loyalty and only care about mining return on investment,” CNBC says.
A new Mining rig market has also started. these “mining rigs” are made of gaming computer parts such as graphics processing unit (GPU) cards. The entire set up cost a minimum of S$3,000 each, and are put together so miners no dont spend much time on the system and more on mining. On Friday (Jan 26), Bloomberg reported some stores at Singapore were selling ready-made computing machines in recent weeks. and and Today reported they are selling like hot cakes, with most stalls running out of stock.
As the popularity of mining cryptocurrency gains speed, it’s affecting the price and availability of graphics cards from both AMD and Nvidia, CNBC reports. Seems like miners are currently using graphics cards to mine “new coins, which can then be sold or held for future appreciation.” This method is now one of the more popular methods of cryptomining.
