In 2017 Nintendo was able to make a lot of money by releasing new versions of their older consoles such as the SNES. Both the SNES and NES Classic Edition immediately sold out when they came out and it was pretty much impossible to get your hands on one for under $100. Neither Sony nor Microsoft has released a classic edition of their past consoles but many gamers would like to get a PlayStation Classic Edition. For the first time, an official from Sony has commented on a PlayStation Classified Edition.
In an interview with Japanese site Mantan Web SIE’s CEO Tsuyoshi Kodera said, “Regarding a reprint edition of PlayStation (PS), Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE)’s game console which was released in 1994 and became a worldwide hit, the company’s president Tsuyoshi Kodera said “There is nothing I can talk about at this time.” On top of that, he also hinted at something by saying “Our company is always digging up past assets, and I think there are various ways to do it. There have been discussions happening (in the company) on what kind of ways are there.” (translated by PlayStation Lifestyle.)
Sony could release a new and smaller version of the original PlayStation console with 20 games similair to what Nintendo did with the SNES and NES Classic Edition. The other for Sony to “digging up past assets” is to start releasing a virtual console of some sorts for the PS 1 on the PS 4. Sony could also port PlayStation Classics for the PS 4 such as Metal Gear Solid or Resident Evil games with the original art. PS 1 games will do great on the PS 4 and it will be easier to do this then making a PS 1 Classic Edition.
