32 Cores AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX to Destroy Intel in High-End CPU Market (Leaked Benchmarks)
The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX is going to be the most powerful CPU of all time
Since AMD released their Ryzen series CPUs, they have been competing with Intel to get their market back from Intel. The AMD Ryzen CPUs were the first CPU series that featured more then four cores for less a relatively low price and Threadripper was competing with Intel in the high-end CPU market. AMD raised the bar by releasing the Threadripper CPU. For only $999.99 users were able to buy a 16 core/32 thread Threadripper CPU. Intel quickly retaliated and released CPUs that featured six cores so they can compete and in some cases bypass AMD. The second-gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper is going to be a very powerful CPU at a low cost.
Threadripper 2990WX Specs/Price
According to a listing on Canada Computers, The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX is going to feature 32 cores, 64 threads, 80 MB of total Cache, and a TDP of 250W. The best part is that this CPU is only going to cost 2,399 Canadian Dollars or USD 1,835. That’s not all. Unlike Intel’s CPUs users wouldn’t have to buy new motherboards to upgrade as the Threadripper 2990WX is going to use TR4 socket, the same socket as AMD Threadripper. Also, TR4 motherboard prices will decrease in the future so even if you don’t have one now you will be able to buy one for a lower price. Intel’s next-gen CPUs are going to use a new socket so you will have to buy new motherboards and it will take a while for the prices to go down so it would cost more to build a PC with the Intel Core i9-7980XE.
Intel’s Core i9-7980XE Price and Specs
The Intel Core i9-7980XE is the biggest competitor to the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX CPU. The Core i9-7980XE features 18 Cores, 36 threads, Max Turbo boost 4.20 GHz, 24.75 MB of Chace, 165 W TDP, and it uses the X299 Chipset. This CPU is also priced at $1,998 while it features 14 cores less than the Threadripper 2990WX. This CPU is very powerful, but when compared to the Threadripper 2990WX it isn’t very powerful.
Intel Core i9-7980XE VS Threadripper 2990WX (Performance)
Now let’s talk about the performance. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX is going to be the most powerful CPU of all time according to AMD’s website. According to the now deleted post, the Threadripper 2990WX did a lot better the I9-7980XE.
“Tests performed by AMD Performance laboratories on 26/06/2018 on the following system. The configurations may vary by PC manufacturer, and give different results. The results may vary depending on the driver versions used. Test setup: TR4 motherboard with AMD “Whitehaven” socket X399 + AMD Ryzen ™ Threadripper ™ 2990WX + Gigabyte X299 AORUS Gaming 9 + Intel Core i9-7980XE.
Both systems feature a GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card (driver 24.21.13.9793), 4 x 8 GB DDR4-3200, Windows 10 x64 Pro (RS3), Samsung 850 Pro SSD. “Power” is defined as computing power as represented by the Cinebench R15 processor benchmark.
The Intel Core i9-7980XE earned 3,335.2 points on average in the benchmark, while the AMD Ryzen ™ Threadripper ™ 2990WX achieved 5,099.3 on average, or 5,099.3 / 3,335.2 = 153%) 53% faster than the Intel Core i9-7980XE. RP2-1.”
It seems like the AMD Threadripper 2990WX is going to be able to smash the Core I9-7980XE. It will be interesting to see how Intel is going to retaliate to second-gen Threadripper.
