Right now EA is hated by most of the gaming community for adding pay to win elements to games such as Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Need for Speed Payback. EA tried to fix the microtransaction problem with Star Wars Battlefront 2, but they failed to do that. EA has added microtransactions to most of their newest games such as Battlefield 1, Battlefront 2, Need for Speed Payback, and more. EA added pay to win elements in their mobile games such as Plants vs. Zombies 2. Apparently, after EA bought PopCap (Plants vs. Zombie’s dev), they fired Plants vs. Zombie’s original creator George Fan.
At that time we didn’t know exactly why Fan got fired, but now we might know. In the Roundtable Live! Podcast McMillen (Fan’s friend) according to McMillen after EA bought PopCap EA wanted to make a sequel to Plants vs. Zombie’s and EA said they know how to make Plants vs. Zombie’s 2. EA told him they should make it be like the original Plants vs. Zombie’s but pay to win so Fan said he doesn’t like that idea and apparently that’s why EA fired him. After the things that McMillen said, George Fan himself confirmed these rumors, and he did confirm that he didn’t want Plants VS Zombies 2 to become a pay to win and EA fired him because of opposing pay to win. Right now EA hasn’t said anything about George Fan’s comments but Kotaku reached out to former PopCap employees, and they have a different story. They say Fan was fired because of a larger layoff. According to them, he was fired because PopCap closed their offices in California, San Mateo, and the office that Fan worked in. According to Kotaku, these sources were high level, PopCap employees. EA will probably comment on these rumors soon.
