AMD Working With Tesla To Develop Their Own AI Chips

Elon Musk Just confirmed at the NIPS conference; Now Tesla is developing its own chips for AI artificial intelligence and chip architect Jim Keller is working on the project. Jim Keller used to be working for AMD on the K8, K12 and ZEN microarchitecture. He was responsible for the x86-64 set and HyperTransport technologies. He based on Elon Musk joined Tesla as Vice President of Autopilot Hardware Engineering.

Elon Musk stated “I want to make it clear that Tesla is serious about artificial intelligence, such as software and hardware, and we are developing our own AI chips,” said the Tesla CEO. He added that Jim Keller is working on the ai-hardware. It’s interesting as Musk has been warning about the risks of artificial intelligence for a long time now.  The company would work with AMD on this. Seems like a team of fifty people led by Jim Keller is working on it. Musk did not say when the chips are expected to be ready and used.

Tesla seems to be up against Nvidia Ai products. Nvidia is very strongly committed to GPU processors that can be used in AD autonomous cars (PX series). These vehicles collect a huge amount of data via their sensors that should be processed and analyzed in real-time so the car could react to the real world. Tesla already has over 1.3 billion miles of road data accumulated through its first generation Autopilot program and that is useful for its second generation Autopilot. The AI and machine learning is entering in all the industries and cars are one of the main industries that are going to get AI in AD modes for the next generation of cars.
