AMD’s upcoming next generation 7nm based graphics architecture code named “Navi” has reportedly been spotted in Linux driver code. The all new GPU architecture is officially slated to debut next year, with all whispers indicating a debut in the latter half of the year.
Navi was peculiarly hidden behind a “Super Secret” ID, no really that’s what AMD’s driver whiz’s have listed it under. The code reads :
“new_chip.gfx10.mmSUPER_SECRET.enable[0:0]”
The Vega architecture is GFX9. Navi is GFX10, which is what gave this new “Super Secret” chip away.
AMD Navi Chip the Linux driver code names of upcoming graphics architectures and that’s the way hardware leak becomes apparent and we are now aware of new AMD GPUs. RTG software use of “Super Secret” seems to be a humorous attempt to keep the code name of this chip hidden. This is not probably about the entire AMD Navi architecture, this code is probably referring to one specific Navi chip. Navi’s arrival was being predicted to being expedited and moved to 2018 summer from the 2019 road-map. AMD is not only expediting their 7nm chips, they are also moving the 12nm to early 2018. this makes 2018 the year of new CPUs and GPUs from AMD that they may become record breaking both for AMD financial aspects and also in terms of performance and competing the rivals intel and nvidia.
AMD Navi GPU May Follow The “Glue” Idea
Navi could also be AMD’s “gluing” project in GPUs. High yielding 7nm GPU dies and create a bigger, more powerful, faster graphics cards. AMD has already showed that they can do this by the Infinity Fabric to link 4 Zeppelin dies to make 32 core EPYC CPUs that there are rumores that they are going to bring it up to 64 cores. Also 2 Zeppelin dies to create the ever popular AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPUs that are now competing the high-end CPU market for AMD. On the GPU side and doing it on Navi is possible. It can improve yields, clock speeds and reduce its overall cost. NVIDIA is also pursuing similar multi-chip-modules currently conducting feasibility studies as reports day. AMD, on the other hand, has already launched products using the technology.
