If you are a fan of strategic games you definitely know about the Anno series, a real-time strategy game made by Ubisoft. The last game in this popular series, Anno 2205 didn’t do that well as it both the game’s fanbase and reviewers disliked the game giving it mediocre reviews. Anno 1800 was released approximately 5 months ago and in this article, we are going to see if the game was able to revive the Anno game series.
Three Game Modes
Anno 18000 features three different game modes, multiplayer, campaign mode, and sandbox mode. All the modes are basically the same but the only difference is that in the campaign mode, you’ll get missions that you have to complete in order to advance your civilization. The campaign mode isn’t anything special but, it’s good to have.
Managing Resources
The game places you in the heart of the Industrial Revolution. Your first goal is to build a farming village as a foundation for your empire. After that you have to meet the demands of your population but, make sure that you don’t go bankrupt. If you meet the demand of your farmers, you will get more and more people to move into the residents that you have established and eventually, you will be able to upgrade to the “workers” group which allows you to make more advanced things like shipbuilding yards and mines.
The issue is that when you reach the worker class, you have to meet the needs of your citizens as well as your own needs ie, building ships. At this point your population may start requiring some resources that you can’t grow on your island so, you have to settle onto a new island that can grow those certain resources. When you settle on the new island, you have to make a whole new town. Of course, you can use resources from your main island which means that things take a lot less time. Also at this point in the game, things become very complicated as you need wood for building things and that requires a warehouse, a lumberjack’s hut, and a sawmill. And you also need stell and clay so you have to make an iron mine and clay pit as well as place down furnaces and steelworks so that you can have Iron beams.
Things get even more complicated because when you unlock the Artisans you have to get resources that aren’t even available in your continent which means that you have to venture out into the Americas or the “New World,” and set up colonies there. When you set up colonies in the new world you have to set up charter routes to bring the much-needed resources back home so that you can make clothes and drinks for your citizens. Throughout the game, players have to manage their resources to meet the citizens demands as well as further their own goals so that they can achieve victory.

The Industrial Revolution
Anno 1800 places the player right in the beginning of the industrial revolution which starts after a few hours of gameplay. After the Artisan age, you get to the engineers and you can start the industrial revolution. The Artisan age introduces a bunch of new resources that you need to manage as well as new demands by your citizens which make the game a tad bit more difficult.

Battles
In my experience, the AI usually doesn’t declare war on you (in the normal mode) and if you start making ships as soon as possible, you will be able to wipe out the pirates as well as most AI opponents. When you attack an enemy harbor and destroy it, you have two options. Either get shares in the island or conquore it which deletes everything on the island and makes it one of your settlements. Buying shares in an enemy island can give you a good amount of income. In my experience, if you group a large number of ships together and attack an enemy harbor, the AI would take too long to get their ships back to the island which lets you easily destroy it.

Expeditions
In Anno 1800, players can send their ships onto expeditions. The first expedition lets you “discover” the Americas and then after that, you can go on different expeditions which will allow you to find unique items like animals for your zoo, artifacts for your museums, or items that give your ships and island bonus effects. Some expeditions are easier than others and don’t require a lot of resources but, some demand higher-level specialists so you have to wait until you get your hands on them.
