Apple’s iMac desktops have been very popular amongst content developers but, one of iMac’s most significant disadvantages over the PC is the fact that iMac’s have no upgrade path. Over the years, Apple has been making it harder and harder to upgrade their iMacs and now with the iMac Pro, and you can’t upgrade it at all unless you open up the system. You might not be surprised by the fact that you can upgrade the RAM but that’s not all, you can also upgrade the CPU and save a lot of money in the process. 

How to Upgrade your iMac Pro 

Linus Tech Tips had recently uploaded a video in which he opens up the iMac Pro and upgrades the RAM and CPU saving thousands of Dollars in the process. If you buy the stuff from iFix it, you will be able to easily replace your iMac’s CPU and RAM. For some reason, the kit will cost you $2000, but if you buy each part individually from iFix it, it will cost you around $550. That’s for the RAM kit.  

First, you have to use the gears that you buy from iFix it to cut the adhesive around the display. After you cut the adhesive, the screen will come right off, and you will have to unplug the wires connected to the monitor. After you open up the monitor, you will have to take out the fan connected to the motherboard and then the motherboard itself. You have to open the heat sink at which point, it will come off, and the CPU will be revealed. You will also see the RAM. You can take out the CPU and put in your new one and replace the RAM with your new RAM. For a detailed guide, you can look at Linus Tech Tip’s video. 

How Much Money Will You Save?

Well, first of all, you will have to go here and buy the parts listed in the bundle. You can purchase the items individually to save a lot of money. If you buy the items separately, it will add up to around $550. You can buy any CPU (as long as the iMac supports it) from Amazon. If you want to buy the high-end CPU that the iMac Pro supports, you will have to shell out around $3,000 on Amazon. The cheapest iMac Pro will cost you $5000. After you pay the $5000 you will have to buy the CPU that you want and RAM and when you add it all up it will cost you around $8,500 overall. If you want to buy an iMac Pro with the same specs, you will have to pay Apple $9,799. Of course, instead of the 18 core CPU, you can buy a lower end CPU, so you pay a lower price.
