Samsung GDDR6 Memory, CES 2018 Innovation Award to be used in Nvidia Volta Volta Gaming Graphic Cards

GDDR6 is used in high performance graphics and now we know that it is NVIDIA’s plans to use Samsung’s 18 Gbps GDDR6 in its upcoming Volta GPUs, but it is not yet known what company will be using SK Hynix’s and Micron Gddr6 technologies. Samsung,SK Hynix and Micron have all accelerated GDDR6 production to start this year 2018. The memory speeds in each brand are different and are: SK Hynix : 10 and 12 Gbps  & 12 and 14 Gbps, Samsung : 18 Gbps, Micron:  12 and 14 and 16 GB/s. So maybe the reason nvidia is going with samsung is the fact that at least for now Samsung gddr6 is the fastest one and was awarded in CES as well.

SK Hynix has listed the GDDR6 memory in its Q1 2018 Databook as available with speeds starting from 10 Gbps and reaching up to 14 Gbps. There are two part numbers available in the list, one has pin speeds of 10 and 12 Gbps and the other has pin speeds of 12 and 14 Gbps lesser than the 18 Gbps chips that Samsung has already started to mass produce last week.

Micron also has Now confirmed with a news post that they have completed the design and qualification of next gen GDDR6 memory technology. They have also mentioned that the company plans to start mass production in first half of 2018. Micron’s graphics division which are based in Munich and Boise are having important roles in memory development and they have reported that GDDR6 will offer pleasant results in memory bandwidth specs. Micron estimates that GDDR6 will achieve 16 Gb/s bin over time while the initial GDDR6 mass production will hit speeds of 12 and 14 GB/s. These speeds are much faster compared to G5X and GDDR5 variants.
