Getting a Little Bit of Magic: How to be a Blue Mage

One of the advantages of the Final Fantasy lore over other MMOs is that the franchise’s expansive roster of jobs gives the game a wide selection. And most recently, the one that got to arrive in Eorzea is thefan favorite Blue Mage. So if you want to be this special kind of spellcaster, don’t worry! It doesn’t take much FFXIV Gil to be one.

But before you don the Magus’ Mask, here are some things you should know about this Disciple of Magic. First is that the class has been traditionally known to copy magic that is exclusive to monsters and be able to use it permanently. In FFXIV, however, that won’t be the case. Nevertheless, the class will still feature magic from monsters such as 1000 Needles from Cactuar, Bad Breath from Marlboro, and even Dragon’s and Ram’s Breath from FFXIV’s Chimera.

Another is that the Blue Mage is the first job to fall under the “limited jobs”. That means it can only reach until level 50–that’s 20 levels below the level 70 cap. If we’re going to spell the obvious, the Blue Mage won’t have access to endgame content. This has caused many Blue Mage and longtime FF fans to be miffed, going as far as calling it as “not an actual job”. Understandably so, as it’s such a shame that a semi-classic Final Fantasy class, unlike its red counterpart, won’t be meta.

Despite being a literal dead-end job, being a Blue Mage isstill unique and enjoyable. After all, there are things more important in video games–including MMOs–than competitive play, and that is fun. So if you want to be one of the monster-magic casting mage we’ve come to know and love, here’s how.

To unlock the Blue Mage as a job, you need to first unlock the aptly named quest Out of the Blue. Its only prerequisite is the level 50 Main Scenario quest The Ultimate Weapon, so you’re pretty much covered once you finish the A Realm Reborn storyline.

You’ll be able to find the issuing NPC, the Zealous Yellowjacket, in LimsaLominsa’s Lower Decks (11,10). She will tell you that she is investigating this particular merchant, Martyn, who claims to be a Blue Mage. He’s been selling magical stones that claim to grant magical powers, but many of his previous customers have been complaining that he’s a fraud, and that his wares have bestowed them nothing.

Simply follow where the quest will lead you–it’s not that hard–and by the end of it, you’ll be a full-fledged Blue Mage.

The Good, The Joke, The Useful

What’s interesting about the Blue Mage is that some of its abilities appeal more to novelty rather than practicality.

Here are some examples:

  • Self-Destruct – the Blue Mage deals fire damage with 900 to nearby enemies but incapacitates himself in the process.
  • Flying Sardine – as the name suggests, a sardine comes leaping in the air, doing 10-potency unaspected damage.
  • Snort – knocks enemies in a cone back by 20 yalms.
  • Tail Screw – target’s HP is cut down to 1. Has low chance of working and has no effect on enemies with higher levels.

On the other hand, the Blue Mage also has some nifty abilities, such as:

  • White Wind – heal party members of an amount equivalent to your current HP.
  • Bristle – next spell’s potency is increased by 50%.
  • Shock Strike – deals 310-potency lightning damage to a target. The spell then deals 30%, 60%, and 70% less damage to its next respective targets.

Regardless of what you feel about the Blue Mage’s status in the meta, it’s definitely a faithful homage to one of the series’ staple classes. So, are you going to try your hand at blue magic? We strongly recommend that you do!
