Nintendo is “Inclined” to Help Publishers Incorporate Cross-Play
Nintendo is Trying to Help Publishers Incorporate Cross-Play in Thier Games
To some cross-play is really important. Before 2018 if you owned an Xbox One you wouldn’t have been able to play with someone on the PC but that has changed with cross-play. Gamers are now able to play with friends on other platforms of course, not the PS 4 since Sony doesn’t like cross-play for some reason. Unlike Sony, Nintendo took in cross-play with open arms. Recently Mojang allowed cross-play between the Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch in Minecraft and Epic Games allowed cross-play between all platforms expect sony. In a recent shareholders meeting, Nintendo said that they are trying to help publishers incorporate cross-play in their games.
Nintendo’s Senior Executive Officer Susumu Tanaka said,
Crossplay basically comes about from conversations between publishers and platform holders. We
are inclined to do what we can to help publishers incorporate crossplay when that is what they want.
The other parties involved also have a say in whether we are able to reach this outcome or not, so we
will continue to discuss it with them.
This isn’t surprising seeing how Fortnite and Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch have cross-play. Right now, it seems like Microsoft and Nintendo are teaming up against Sony.
Cross-play first started off with Microsoft. First, Microsoft incorporated cross-play between the PC and Xbox One and later expanded it to the Nintendo Switch but since the day that Microsoft announced cross-play Sony has been blocking it. In a recent interview, Todd Howard said, “Sony is not as helpful as everyone would like it to be.” The latest victim of Sony’s blocking of cross-play is Fallout 76. Fallout 76 is a multiplayer game so cross-play would be very useful. If you log into Fortnite on the Nintendo Switch you would have to make another account to be able to play Fortnite on the PS 4 and vice-versa. This is sad news for fans as you wouldn’t be able to show off your legendary skins on other platforms.
