The 3DS is not going away until the Switch becomes a “one-per-person system”

When Nintendo released the Switch everyone thought that the Nintendo 3DS is going to die out in a year or two but those people were wrong. The Nintendo 3DS sold 750k units in December 2017 in the US. In fact, the Nintendo 3DS sold 27% more units in 2017 then it did in 2016. These numbers might have been unexpected for many gamers but it makes sense considering that Nintendo has released so many exclusive games for the 3DS in 2017 compared to 2016.

In a Q&A session, Nintendo said

“Consumers purchased 3DS systems in numbers we expected last fiscal year. It has an ample software lineup at a price point that makes the system affordable especially for parents looking to buy for their kids. We expect that demand to continue during this fiscal year as well, so we will continue to sell the product.

Given that Switch is a home gaming system that can be taken on the go, this situation may change if it grows from being a one-per-household system to a one-per-person system. But the price of Switch is not something with which most parents would buy a system for every one of their children in a short period of time. Moving forward, we will work to ascertain what kinds of play people want at which price points, and as long as there is such demand, we will continue to sell the 3DS system. I see the product coexisting with Nintendo Switch at this point in time.”

Nintendo has been releasing many great Nintendo 3DS games and they going to continue doing the same thing for a few years. Nintendo is going to release a big game this month for the Nintendo 3DS Detective Pikachu. It’s not surprising to see the Nintendo 3DS existing for a few more years. The Nintendo Switch costs $299.99 and that is a very high price for many families to be able to buy more than one Nintendo Switch console but you can buy a Nintendo 2DS for only $79.99. The Nintendo 2DS has so many games and a low price of only $79.99 is definitely worth you can even argue that it is more worth it then the Nintendo Switch right now.
