The EU commission paid €360,000 to study the impact piracy has on books, movies, music, and video games but they never released the report.
Julia Reda Tweeted, “What the @EU_Commission found out about #copyright infringement but ‘forgot’ to tell us.” and a link. The report was 304 pages long. The report found illegal downloads actually help sales, but piracy does hurt blockbuster movies. We know about the report because Julia Reda [a member of the EU parliment] released the post on her blog.
For some reason, This report was not published by the EU, but a report was released about piracy, and it talked about the part of piracy hurting blockbuster films. The report said, “Based on an online questionnaire with almost 30,000 respondents, we document that one unpaid (first) viewing of a movie displaces about 0.37 units of paid viewings. Using a back-of-the-envelope calculation, we show that this implies that unpaid movie viewings reduced movie sales in Europe by about 4.4% during the sample period.”
