Single-Player Games are Going to Become Very Rare in the Coming Years

In the future, it’s going to be hard to find single-player games

In recent years, triple-A developers have been making less and less single-player games. EA has even said that consumers keep coming back to online games but they don’t come back in single-player games.

The first reason that single-player games are going to disappear is the fact that developers will probably make more money from an online game than a single-player game. Games as a service has the potential to make developers a lot of money. With a game such as Sea of Thieves Rare doesn’t have to make a new game every few years they could just keep adding DLC which is a lot cheaper than making a new game. But with a game such as God of War Sony wouldn’t be able to make money after a few years and they would have to make a new God of War. Over time games as a service is more worth it to developers then a single-player game as they could just add DLC.

The second reason is the fact that developers could monetize anything they want in an online game. Right now, developers are monetizing skins, and that is making them a lot of money. Look at Fortnite, so many people are buying skins on that game, and a lot of those skins aren’t cheap. The third reason is that multiplayer games keep getting gamers to come back. After a while, most people will eventually get tired from a single-player game and move on especially if the game doesn’t have mods, but with an online game, the devs could add a bunch of DLC to get players to come back. Look at GTA Online, how many people do you know that still play GTA V single-player. Rockstar games keep adding bid DLCs to GTA Online and by doing that they are getting gamers to come back and in turn, they will make money as there is a good chance that one of them would buy shark cards.

Don’t get me wrong single-player games are fantastic I have played through Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 a lot of times but business wise it makes sense for companies to make games as a service instead of a single-player.
