Some Believe Apple Might Be Behind Intel-AMD Deal
Apple Or Microsoft Are Likely To Be The First Buyers Of This New Chip Design
A while ago MarketWatch reported about Intel unveiling a new product family for its 8th Generation Core 35-watt processor + AMD Radeon graphics chip on a single package to create a new class of Thin Notebooks capable of Being a gaming laptop and VR ready. Intel has not branded it yet, but it is probably to be announced in CES in January. The announcement is important because it solidifies a partnership between competitors AMD and Intel for a product in a space in which both compete. And every body could guess who is the loser her, Nvidia. But about why apple or Microsoft, Intel and AMD may not be talking about the costumer if its going to be a single product. But you can bet that Apple will be one of the first maybe the biggest buyer of these chips for 2018. Many Apple MacBooks already combine an Intel processor with AMD Radeon graphics and one of the hallmarks of apple is going for very light weight and very thin. Both are shared goals of the whole project. But why Microsoft? Microsoft has the Surface up and running well and in pas two years have delivered Surface pro and surface 4 with high graphics in that thin size and good proccessors but one of the main issues with surface laptops and tablets is that they are heavy and thick comparing to that screen sizes and usage. Surface actually has the strongest CPU/GPU among the class but is also thikest and heaviest. Maybe its microsoft pushing for more performance and less thickness.
Kaby Lake-G, will take a high performance H-series Intel processor, likely a quad-core as an AMD-built semi-custom graphics chip, along with second-generation HBM (high-bandwidth memory) for the graphics to use. AMD is only supplying the graphics chip to Intel though. And its Intel being simply a customer of AMD’s semi-custom division. For AMD, this is a big win. It expands the company’s portfolio on the semi-custom division with a customer that could potentially sell millions of units. Intel is the largest chip provider for the notebook space and any portion of the market is a great for AMD to add to its current laptop market. Intel is using a new technology called EMIB (Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge) to combine the silicon. This allows chips from different process technologies and from different vendors to be packaged together and communicate over a very high-speed, low-profile interface.
