Razer’s digital game store has failed, shutting down in February Have you ever thought that in terms of online stores for video games, Steam was sort of a monopoly? Well, the same though went through Razer’s head when they first opened their store not too long ago. The store was opened in April of 2018, and looks like it wasn’t even able to last a year. The reasons are still unclear as many people were expecting the store to be very successful as an alternative to Steam. However, it looks like the gaming hardware manufacturer was not able to invest enough in terms of marketing and sales as some of the community weren’t even aware of the fact that the store existed. The sale of games will stop on February 28th, but representatives from the company have announced that any pre-orders will be delivered to the customers that made them. But it is still unclear as to why the store would plop so badly within just 10 months of operation. Well, the first case is the fact that Steam is just way too big and popular. And many of the customers that actually utilized Razer’s digital store noted that there was nothing too different about it. Therefore it is quite obvious why it would fail. If there was no additional value, then why would gamers choose a smaller platform where their libraries wouldn’t transfer to? Steam is known to give out a lot of benefits to their users, and in all honesty it is quite hard to understand Razer at this point. Launching the platform in April, right before the Steam Summer Sales was probably not the best idea. Steam subsidies Furthermore the subsidies that Steam offers its offshore users cannot be ignored. By subsidies I mean the lower prices. Here’s how it works. If you are in the United States or United Kingdom, you get to pay the whole price of the game, in most cases $60. In some cases the UK gamers have to pay even more. So this is already a hint to the fact that Steam adjusts the prices of the game depending on where the gamer is located and the strength of his/her local currency. This was probably a large driver in the past when the Russian eSports industry was on the rise, thanks to the lower prices professional gaming and gaming in general became rampant in Eastern Europe, which is now one of the largest markets to go around. The only value that Razer’s store offered its customers were some discounts on games and their own merchandise. But beating the Steam Summer and Christmas sales is pretty much impossible. It’s not expected for Razer to try the gaming store again, so we can expect them to continue focusing on hardware.
