Until the Nintendo Switch, it was a tradition for Nintendo to release all of their old games from older consoles for the new consoles. Nintendo did it for the Wii and the Wii U but for some reason they didn’t do it for the Switch. This had many fans scratching their heads and wondering why wouldn’t Nintendo just release their older games for the Switch and get a lot of money. I was wondering the same thing until I saw a video by YouTube channel Beatemups.
In the video Wood says that the reason for Nintendo not releasing the virtual console for the Switch is because of the indies. Indie games have been doing very good on the Nintendo Switch in fact they have been doing so well that Nintendo has a category for indie games called Nindies. If Nintendo were to release Virtual console for the Nintendo Switch the indies would probably start disappearing from the eShop. Right now the Nintendo Switch eShop doesn’t have many big games so it’s the best place for an indie game to succeed. If Nintendo does release virtual console games for the Switch most people would rather buy something like the Legend of Zelda instead of Stardew Valley. Also, Virtual Console games are very cheap so for the price almost all of them are worth it but a good indie game will cost you more than $15 for the most part.
Nintendo has had problems with third-party developers for a long time. The reason for Nintendo releasing Virtual console games for the Wii U might’ve been because of the fact that the Wii U library didn’t have a lot of games. The Nintendo Switch has a lot of indie games and if Nintendo starts releasing virtual consoles on the Switch most people will start buying them instead of indies so indie devs would abandon the Switch.
Another reason for Nintendo not releasing Virtual console on the Switch might be because they make more profits from indies then Virtual console games. Indie devs pay Nintendo money so they can have their game on the eShop and maybe a fraction of their profits. If a lot of Virtual console games are released on the Switch indies would probably die out. Nintendo might be making more money from the indie devs then making virtual console games for the Switch.
