Xbox Boss on Sony’s Shocking Cross-Play Policy on PS, And possible strategy preparing for Playstation 5 (PS5)
Mike Ybarra’s responded to Sony’s New Cross-Play Policy, “Still isn’t listening to gamers”
Microsoft and Nintendo have been working hard to connect gamers across platforms together so they can play games together online. Epic Games implemented this feature to the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One versions of Fortnite Battle Royal and Minecraft. This was good news for many gamers, but the biggest problem was Sony. Sony also blocked Cross-Play on Fallout 76, so Bethesda just abandoned the project. Because of Sony, PC gamers aren’t able to play with Xbox One players on Fallout 76.
In a recent interview, Sony’s boss said “On cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users, that’s our belief,” he said, according to Press Association.” This response doesn’t entirely make sense as even if PlayStation is the best way to play, what if PS 4 gamers want to play with players on other platforms. Sony has been saying that they are doing this to protect gamers on the PS 4 from people on other platforms.
Xbox has been a big fan of cross-play so they have been doing anything they can to get Sony to work on cross-play with Nintendo. Xbox’s Boss Tweeted, “Still isn’t listening to gamers. All games should be cross play and progression with the right input flexibility and gamer options. —-> Sony boss dismisses Fortnite cross-play controversy – The Verge.” Usualy companies don’t take the side of gamers, but Xbox is trying to make gamers happy by getting Sony to allow cross-play on their games.
Sony has already made statements explaining why they don’t allow cross-play but gamers haven’t been taking it. Most gamers have been saying that Sony is only doing this because they want people to have to buy PS 4s to play with their friends and that they don’t actually want to keep the kids safe from people on other platforms.
Fortnite and PS cross-play controversy & PS5
Although Sony’s current policy on crossplay seems dumb but it kind of makes sense in the long run.
Sony has reached out about it, saying; “We’re always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience. Fortnite is already a huge hit with PS4 fans, offering a true free-to-play experience so gamers can jump in and play online. With 79 million PS4s sold around the world and more than 80 million monthly active users on PlayStation Network, we’ve built a huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles. We also offer Fortnite cross-play support with PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices, expanding the opportunity for Fortnite fans on PS4 to play with even more gamers on other platforms.“
The strategy behind it may in some ways relate to the PS5 release. Having in mind PS4 is still doing well in sales and no new console has been out recently to make Sony rush the ps5 release. PS5 should have some major benefits for players to make them go for an upgrade. Microsoft and Nintendo have taken advantage of what does appear to be a weak spot for Sony by going out of their way to make sure gamers know that they, unlike Sony, will be supportive of the idea of cross-console play going forward.
