7nm AMD Zen 2: High-End Performance in Cheap, Slim Laptop!? (Latest Rumors)

AMD Zen 2 CPU Latest News, Leaks, and Rumors

Right now, Nvidia and Intel control most of the laptop market. If you go online, you will see pretty much all new laptops and pre-built PCs use Intel CPUs and Nvidia GPUs. AMD is way behind Intel in the laptop market but, it seems like AMD’s next-gen 7nm Ryzen CPUs are going to be able to deliver high-end performance in a cheap and slim laptop.

AMD Zen 2 Latest Rumors and Benchmark

AMD revealed Zen 2’s Cinebench R15 scores at their conference in CES 2019 and it seems like Zen 2 is going to be packing serious heat. According to AMD, an 8 core, 16 threads Zen 2 CPU scored 2,057 on Cinebench R15 while the $500 Intel Core I9-9900k scored 2,040. The Zen 2 system only used 130w-132w of power while the Intel Core I9-9900k 180w of power. Both benchmarks were supposedly done on identical systems. You should also keep in mind that this benchmark was done with clock speeds that aren’t finalized so, expect higher scores when Zen 2 is released.

Thanks to credible sources around the internet, we have also gotten a specs list for all AMD Zen 2 CPUs. If this list is true AMD’s $229 Ryzen 5 3600X was able to beat the $500 Intel Core I9-9900k in Cinebencnh. AMD most likely didn’t use the Ryzen 5 3600 in the Cinebench R15 benchmarks as it’s boost clock is only 4.4 GHz so, it’s highly unlikely for it to be able to beat the Core I9-9900k.

Zen 2 to Deliver High-End Gaming Performance In Laptop

If we assume that the specs list is real, the Ryzen 5 3600X will be able to outperform the Core I9-9900k. This means that for only $229, you are going to be able to get a CPU that can do serious productivity work. AMD Zen 2 CPUs are also going to make less heat than competing Intel CPUs thanks to the 7nm Zen 2 architecture. It’s really hard for laptop manufacturers to make a slim laptop that features high-end specs but, that is going to be possible with Zen 2. Laptop manufacturers are going to be able to deliver high-end performance in a slim and relatively low priced laptop.
