AMD & NVIDIA, When Will The GPU Shortage End?

The GPU Shortage Will Probably End, But With New GPU Gens or The Old Ones?

While bot AMD and Nvidia has mentioned they are aware of the shortage their response has not been very hopeful with the GPU market. AMD has mentioned that they will try to release more and increase production but no date or specification on how and what graphics. Nvidia also has only mentioned that the retail sellers should limit the quantity to 1 or 2 to every costumer while putting on their site that a subscription system to notify gamers of the new graphics releases.

Right now it’s the worst possible time to build a PC unless you aren’t going to put a GPU in it. Graphics Cards prices have recently skyrocketed and they are pretty much out of stock everywhere on the web. Right now on Amazon you will have to spend one thousand Dollars to get your self a brand new GTX 1080 TI. Many PC gamers will recommend you to buy a pre-built. This is happening because of crypto miners. To be able to make a profit from crypto mining you will need to have a rig with more than 6 GPUs. Many miners even have up to 100 or even more graphics cards in many rigged systems made just for mining. Miners keep buying more and more GPUs and it seems that AMD and Nvidia just can’t keep up with the demand. Nvidia did try to make the situation better by asking retailers to set a two GPUs limit per person so gamers can get their GPUs but they can’t force retailers to do that. Nvidia also made their own online stores and there is a two graphics card limit per person.

If you have been watching the out of stuck graphics pages for the last 3 month you should have been seeing some availabilities pop-ing up every 2 to 3 hours. Also some pre-orders have been seen in amazon. These are signs that show the new graphics are coming especially the preorders for mid feb 2018 for EVGA nvidia graphics.

The massive GPU shortage will probably not end until cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin crash and miners stop buying GPUs. If Bitcoin does crash we will probably see thousands of destroyed graphics cards on eBay and Craigslist. Miners keep their GPUs working at max load 24/7 so after they are used for a year it will probably be damaged. So one way for the GPU shortage to stop is for these cryptocurrencies to crash.

Another way to stop the GPU shortage is for miners to switch to CPUs for mining. It may not be as profitable as GPUs but a cryptocurrency named Monero with the XMR-STAK program using the Threadripper 1950x  CPU it used only 246 watts. If you keep it running for 24/7 for 1.5 years you will earn all of the CPUs money back and the fluctuations could give them interest. It may work for the new currencies but the ones with higher difficulty level need even more that GPUs. The Threadripper 1950x got a 1483 hash rate.
