AMD Radeon VII Could Get Big Performance Boost by a Small Patch

The Radeon VII Has a lot of Room for Optimization

AMD’s 7nm GPU series was hyped up by a lot of leaks from credible sources claiming that Navi will blow the competition out of the water. The $250 AMD Navi GPU was supposedly going to perform like the $500 Nvidia RTX 2070. Unfortunatly, we quickly found out that these rumors were %100 false when AMD announced Radeon VII at CES. You might have been a bit disappointed when you saw the Radeon VII’s benchmark but, it seems like AMD could easily increase performance by a small patch.

AMD Radeon VII Specs and Benchmarks

We know that the Radeon VII is going to feature 3840 unified cores, a boost clock of 1800MHz, 16GB of VRAM, and a 1TB/s bandwidth. For comparison, the Nvidia RTX 2080 features 2944 unified cores, a boost clock of 1710MHz, 8GB of VRAM, and a 448GB/s bandwidth. In the benchmarks below, the games were run at 4k ultra settings. The red bar is the Radeon VII.

AMD Can Give the Radeon VII a big Performance Boost

AMD has already given their GPUs a big performance boost through a simple GPU driver. The things is the AMD Radeon VII is going to feature specs that are far superior to the Nvidia RTX 2080 but, it will perform like the RTX 2080. The benchmarks show that it performs very similarly to the RTX 2080, in some cases a little worse.

With superior specs, you’d expect it to perform at least 15% better than the RTX 2080 but, for some reason, it doesn’t. This is probably due to optimization issues. AMD is trying to get their 7nm GPU series released asap to compete with Nvidia RTX so they didn’t spend a lot of time on optimization. In a few months and a few updates, the AMD Radeon VII may be able to perform up to %20 better than the RTX 2080. By that point, they could start rolling out the lower-end Navi cards which will be much more optimized then the Radeon VII is right now.
