3 Retro Games You Can Play on Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch has been taking the gaming industry by storm with its innovative design of being a fully-fledged but portable console. It bridges the gap between remote and home gaming, with an estimated 32 million units sold worldwide since its release in March 2017.  In a similar manner to the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, there were rumours of a 2.0 or XL version last year. However, we brought news that this probably wasn’t going to happen, with Nintendo instead focusing their attention on great games.

What is the Best Game for the Nintendo Switch?

In our opinion, the best game for the Switch is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

It’s set at the end of the Zelda series timeline, with you (Link) being given the ability to explore the world of Hyrule. As always, your main quest is to defeat Calamity Ganon and secure the kingdom, along with Princess Zelda. However, the beauty of Breath of the Wild is the numerous side storylines you can embark upon.

That’s all made possible by the game being designed as a vast open world sandbox that encourages exploration and experimentation within the environment. It is the first game in the Zelda series to use an advanced physics engine, along with an additional chemistry engine – and it truly feels as though there are endless possibilities.

The game has been widely praised, receiving critical acclaim as soon as it was released. To date, it has sold around 12 million copies worldwide, making it the most popular Zelda game ever.

Can You Play Old Games on Nintendo Switch?

Despite Breath of the Wild’s success, it’s not the only beauty of this hybrid console. You have access to an online library full of classic games which you can download, much like Netflix. This collection avoids the age-old backwards compatibility issues inherent in most consoles because you don’t need a specific type of interface to get the games (just an internet connection).

This has opened up a world of possibilities, including the debate about the best Nintendo Switch retro games to play…

Quality Nintendo Switch Retro Games

Two of our favourite retro games for the Nintendo Switch are Money Puzzle Exchanger and Donkey Kong, both re-released in 2018.

Money Puzzle Exchanger (Switch) First Look on Nintendo Switch – Gameplay

Money Puzzle Exchanger

Money Puzzle Exchanger was first released by FACE studio in 1997, and even then, showed massive potential.

It’s a relatively simple stacking game where players compete to match coins in lines. It works in a similar manner to slot machines, where you need to align symbols in a specific order to win coins and/or casino spins.

The way players do this is by pulling the coins from their place and matching them with another coin of their type. Once they’re matched, the money will disappear from the screen and the player receives points.

You can play Money Puzzle Exchanger in multiplayer mode as well for added entertainment.

Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong was first released in 1981 by Nintendo before being re-released for the Switch – and it’s one of the largest selling franchises of all time.

Donkey Kong (Arcade) Nintendo Switch Review

If you have not already played it, the game is beautifully simple. Jumpman (aka Mario) must climb ladders and jump across platforms in order to get from the bottom of the screen to the top. As you climb, Donkey Kong tries to put you off by throwing barrels at you or letting anthropomorphised flames catch you.

Classic gaming at its best!
