The Nintendo Switch was easily the most popular console of 2017. Thanks to the console’s hybrid form, its the first time that gamers are able to play home console quality games on a portable gaming console. The console did so well that it out did Nintendo’s expectations by millions of units. All of this combined with a recent rumor, gamers, and news sites quickly started speculating about a hardware refresh of the Nintendo Switch. For many reasons, that doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Rumor Suggests Nintendo Switch 2.0 is Coming

We knew that in 2018, Nintendo was going to focus more on manufacturing more Nintendo Switch consoles to catch up to the demand. Sometime after, it was rumored that Nintendo is going to release a hardware refresh of the Switch.

In 2018 it was reported that Nintendo will be looking into more network related features and peripherals for the Switch. Nintendo didn’t release a hardware refresh of the Switch in 2018 because they focused more on production issues. A person that was familiar with “Nintendo’s development plan” said that a hardware refresh of the Switch will fit perfectly into Nintendo’s plan. Nintendo said that they want to extend the Switch’s life cycle from the traditional 5-6 years.

Hardware Refresh of the Switch Probably Not Happening

The Nintendo Switch is really popular and, we know that Nintendo wants to extend the console’s lifespan. Although we don’t have anything official, we can guess if Switch 2.0 is happening or not from Nintendo’s actions. The Wii was Nintendo’s last popular gaming console selling millions of units in a matter of months. Nintendo released a hardware refresh of the Wii with the Wii Mini but, it wasn’t an upgrade over the Wii. Some features were taken out of the Wii Mini but, it had a lower price and ran all Wii games. Even if Nintendo does release a hardware refresh of the Switch, it’s not going to be something like the Xbox One X or the PS 4 Pro. Nintendo might simply make a bigger Nintendo Switch console or one with better battery life, nothing major.
