Many fans are still playing the original Battlefront 2, and they want to play multiplayer. The problem is multiplayer was closed in 2014 because of the Gamespy shutdown. It’s possible to play multiplayer using apps such as Gameranger, but it is not like the true Battlefront 2 multiplayer.
GOG posted this, “the critically acclaimed shooter of massively entertaining warfare, has received a critical update. Powered by GOG Galaxy, the multiplayer function of the game has now been restored AND with added Crossplay support between GOG Galaxy and Steam to boot.” 64 player can play on the player-hosted servers. If you own the game updated it to play online. The game costs $9.99 on Steam and $3.99 in GOG sale. GOG team member said, “for BF2 we had access to the source code and Disney’s full support.” He also they might bring back online to other games that use Gamespy.
Many players are saying they can’t even join servers or some others are saying they experience a lot of lag. Many users in the games Steam thread are saying, “Online is back, but I cant play it” or, “Insane server lag.” Many say the lag is because the game doesn’t have dedicated servers.

Many older games such as Halo, Age of Empires, Most DS and Wii games, and many more used Gamespy for online matches. Gamespy was shut down because Glu Mobile bought it from IGN Entertainment in 2012. After Glu bought Gamespy, they closed down servers for many older games without warning the developers, and after a while, they announced Gamespy would be closed on May 31, 2014. Some publishers moved online servers to other platforms, but most companies didn’t because most games that used Gamespy were old. Many players use other apps such as GameRanger to play games with closed online servers.
