The PS 4 train is going very strong even though the Switch has been doing well it hasn’t stopped the PS 4 train. It might’ve slowed it down a little bit, but it’s still going fast and strong. The PS 4 has been selling very well since it’s launch in 2013 and it has sold more than 70 million units. According to Eric Lempel (Sony’s Senior Vice President and Head of PlayStation Network) said that the PS 4 had it’s best Black Friday. Another console that’s been doing very well is the Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo Switch has been outselling the PS 4 every month for a long time now, and the Nintendo Switch and PS 4 are now competing.
In an interview with Nikkei Kazuhiko Takeda (Sony’s head of corporate planning) talked about the success of the Nintendo Switch. Takeda says that the PS 4 is going strong into the Holiday season, but Sony can’t ignore Nintendo’s hybrid console the Nintendo Switch. Takeda says that the Switch has caught the attention of consumers and their business model is to sell both hardware and games. According to Takeda Sony is trying to make more gamers pay “continuously for content.” By that Takeda means making gamers pay for subscription services such as PS Plus and PS Now. The PS 4 has sold 70.6 million units worldwide, and more than 617.8 million PS 4 Games have been sold digitally and retail. That places the PS 4 at the 9th most sold console ever below the 73.9 million units of PSPs sold and above PS 3’s 70.2 million units. The PS VR has been selling extremely good too right now it’s the best selling VR headset. The PS VR has sold more than 2 million units and 12.2 million PS VR games sold. The PS VR will probably not reach the top 5 best selling consoles ever, but it will probably reach around 5th.
“At our gaming business, sales of the PlayStation 4 are strong heading into the holidays. But we can’t ignore the Nintendo Switch, which has also captured consumers’ attention. Our business model involves selling both the game console and the software for it, so we’re working to get more customers paying continuously for content, for example through paid subscription services.”
