Star Wars Battlefront II was a massive disappointment for both players and EA. Players were very excited when they heard about the game and it was long awaited. When players got access to the game they realized that the game is a pay to win. Star Wars Battlefront II was priced at $59.99 when it came out so when players realized that you could pay real money to upgrade your star cards and skip a lot of progression players got very mad and Battlefront II flopped. Because of Battlefront II EA’s stock lost billions of dollars. It was a disappointment to EA as they expected the game to do well. Of course, EA did resolve this issue and in an interview with The Verge, EA told them that they have learned from their Battlefront II mistakes.
In the interview, Patrick Söderlund an EA executive told The Verge, ” “I’d be lying to you if I said that what’s happened with Battlefront and what’s happened with everything surrounding loot boxes and these things haven’t had an effect on EA as a company and an effect on us as management. We can shy away from it and pretend like it didn’t happen, or we can act responsibly and realize that we made some mistakes, and try to rectify those mistakes and learn from them.” It seems like EA isn’t going to make a pay to win game again so that’s good news for gamers.
Star Wars Battlefront II isn’t the only game that is experiencing backlash for microtransactions. Middle Earth Shadow of War received a lot of backlash from players. In fact, Shadow of War received so much backlash that they completely removed microtransactions from the game last month.
