Nvidia “Volta, Ampere, Turing” & cryptocurrency mining dedicated GPU

Nvidia introduced “Volta” graphics chip in May 2017. It appeared in the GV100 chip firmly inserted into Nvidia’s Tesla V100 graphics cards. While Volta GPUs won’t appear in gaming, Nvidia is expected to bring new GPUs for the gaming market codenamed “Turing,” in GPU Technology Conference (GTC) March 26. But what ever the name is, it should cover two important markets, Gaming and Mining.

The Turing code name stems from a Reuters article covering Nvidia’s quarterly results conference call. All the recent news leads us to the three code names: Volta, Ampere, and Turing. Nvidia typically doesn’t create different architectures for different markets, of course this was the norm before the rise of AI, Nvidia creates one generational architecture and produces different, tweaked chips based on that design for multiple markets.

But soon AMD and Nvidia should respond to the new type of demands by the GPU market? These new costumers dont care about the GPU brand or design, frame rate or 4k support, smooth gameplay or even a video output. The only thing they care about is more hash rates by lower power consumption.

The needs of the gaming and mining markets are very different and this urges both companies to create dedicated graphics for these markets. Maybe in the past 5 month while we are in the graphics shortage they have been thinking about how to address these needs. Everything going forward is probably going to be Volta based. Ampere and Turing code names are pointing to different market. Right now the hunger is so intense in GPU market that miners and gamers both are willing to pay hundreds more than the original price to get their hands on a GPU.

“We do think that cryptocurrency has been a very significant factor in both revenue and pricing, creating a shortage environment that is boosting pricing,” Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore said in a note.

We have heard about Nvidia’s new line up of advanced GPUs called Nvidia Ampere last year and early 2018 but now we are hearing about a new Nvidia’s lineup of GPUs coming on march from a credible source Reuters. It is not volta or ampere. It is called turing.

The new GPU gaming chip, code named Turing, is expected to be unveiled next month. Even without it, Nvidia’s revenue from gaming rose 29 percent to $1.74 billion in the fourth quarter, accounting for more than half of its total revenue.
