Nvidia’s manufacturing partner TSMC has confirmed that volume production of the upcoming Volta GPUs will begin towards the end of year, giving us major clues as to the release date.

The Nvidia Volta is to be the graphics card giant’s successor to its Pascal architecture. Now that the bigest Nvidia GPU rival AMD has just shown working on the new Vega with its high-end gaming Vega architecture, Volta may be next in 2017 or 2018. What is Nvidia Volta? Volta is the code name for Nvidia’s new graphics architecture after pascal. Graphics architecture is same as the chip’s design. Volta is the next to replace to Pascal, which was the codename for the 10-series GPUs ranging from the GTX 1050 all the way up to the GTX 1080 Ti. Volta, in the pro space, is out-performing Pascal by 132% right now. The Tesla V100 Volta chip is sporting the 12nm FinFET design from TSMC so there’s no reason to think it’ll be any different for the consumer releases.

Volta is already being shipped and working on Massive V100 Serves systems but While it tells us that the Volta launch is well and truly underway and close, it doesn’t give us the a clear hint as to whether Nvidia is going to launch a desktop GPU based on the technology any time soon in 2017 or early 2018. We know AMD is already leaked to be working on RX Vega 2 to be released in early 2018. Nvidia launched Pascal based GPUs in April 2016 before revealing its Pascal-based gaming GPUs in May and putting them on sale at the end of that month. if the history is going to repeat its self we may be seeing the volt gaming platforms in early Q1 2018 to be announced and shipped about end of April 2018.
