PLAYSTATION’S next-gen console could be announced in 2019, some rumors say, while some other rumors point to 2020 as PS5 release date | 7nm CPU AMD Zen 2?
Sony PlayStation has had a great year. The console giants have had a pretty fantastic console generation, topped off with a fantastic Game Awards 2018 win for God of War most recently. The Sony PlayStation 5 is going to be Sony’s next-gen console? Maybe that is the question we should ask. cause some rumors are saying an update may come in 2019 while 2019 may not seem the best choice for sony.
Rumors have started spreading about the next-generation of consoles. We do know that the PS 5 is definitely happening thanks to a recent statement by Sony themselves. The PS 5 is rumored to be the worlds most powerful console thanks to its 7nm AMD Navi GPU and Ryzen CPU. What we don’t know is if it will feature 7nm AMD Ryzen 2 or AMD Ryzen.
The PS 5 to Feature AMD Ryzen CPUs
AMD is going to release the worlds first 7nm gaming CPU, Zen 2 sometime in 2019. This places the PS 5 in the same time range as AMD Zen 2. We do know that the Sony PlayStation 5 is going to feature AMD Ryzen thanks to a recent rumor that claims someone at PlayStation is working with AMD Ryzen technology.
“A principal programmer at Sony associated with the firm’s Advanced Technology Group is working with AMD’s Ryzen technology, improving the Zen core’s micro-architecture support within the LLVM compiler stack – a key component of a tool used in the PlayStation 4 development environment. Of course, there is no PS4 product using the Ryzen processor, leading to speculation that this is related to a prospective next-gen PlayStation 5 console currently in development.
The evidence – unearthed by Linux-specialist site Phoronix – shows the highly experienced Sony programmer making a number of commits to the LLVM github over the last few weeks, all of them related to the “znver1″ architecture, the codename for AMD’s first generation Ryzen processors. On top of that, information on LinkedIn confirms the staffer’s involvement in compiler development for PlayStation hardware. Game credits in Media Molecule’s Tearaway and Evolution Studios’ DriveClub confirm that the developer is also a part of Sony’s Advanced Technology Group, which serves a number of roles in the Sony organization.”
This is good news as it means the PS 5 is going to be a very powerful gaming console. Thanks to its powerful CPU and GPU, it should be able to run games at decent visual settings.
Will it Use 7nm AMD Zen 2? + NAVI GPU?
The PS 5 is probably not going to feature AMD Zen 2. Although Zen 2 would be good news as it is a powerful CPU and thanks to its 7nm architecture, it’s going to be perfect for portable gaming as it will be more power efficient than other CPUs. The Sony PlayStation 5 is likely going to cost around $400 so, AMD Zen 2 will likely be too expensive. Zen 2 will be a somewhat new CPU when the PS 5 is released so it will likely be out of the console’s price range.
Will it be backwards compatible?
Possibly. Unlike rival console maker Microsoft, which has invested heavily in making older games work on its Xbox One and One X systems, Sony has skipped the feature – known as backwards compatibility – on its PS4 range.
Last year, Sony’s head of global game development, Shawn Layden, told Time: “When we’ve dabbled with backwards compatibility, I can say it is one of those features that is much requested, but not actually used much.
