AMD chips Now On Microsoft Surface 3

Microsoft decided to end its partnership with Intel and switch to AMD to power upcoming Surface Go, Surface Laptop, and Surface Pro devices. One interesting rumor floating around is that Microsoft will sell an AMD-powered version of the Surface Laptop 3. This would be a first for the Surface lineup. According to Petri, AMD will bring a 12-nanometer SoC codenamed Picasso that introduces a Zen+ Core with Vega graphics to at least one Surface Laptop 3 configuration. Microsoft is reportedly going that route because of its relationship with Intel is rumored to be “on shaky ground.” Going the AMD route could give Microsoft a path to lowering the starting price of the Surface Laptop 3, or offering a version with better graphics, which AMD chips typically offer.

With AMD, a 12nm Picasso SoC could be used in the Surface laptop. The Surface Pro, on the other hand, could be using that ARM silicon we talked about earlier. As for a potential announcement, Microsoft is expected to host an event this fall, focusing on its Surface range. The company is expected to announce updates to a wide range of hardware, and we believe that the changes will be seen in the internals rather than the design and physical appearance.

Microsoft used Intel to power its Surface range for the past 5 years. The recent vulnerabilities had a major impact on the reputation of Microsoft devices. Microsoft already developed some prototype Surface devices. Currently, the company is testing ARM and AMD chips that can run on those prototypes + Qualcomm Snapdragon chips to power some of the Surface Pro prototype.

The next generation Xbox Scarlett consoles are powered by AMD chips. So, Microsoft has an extra reason to switch to AMD for its Surface devices CPUs as well. In terms of performance, Qualcomm-powered devices are comparatively less powerful than Intel-based laptops.
