3 Feet to 80 Feet, Wireless Charging Is Just Getting Better

We recently reported about a new wireless charging technology that will be shown in the CES 2018 that is able to charge devices in up to 80 feet distance. If is was 5 years ago we would not believe it. but now Powercast is not alone anymore. Wattup just released a news about being approved for its new wireless charging technology. Wattup is also bringing its new products to the next Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2018).

In the past years some wireless charging technologies have been introduced to the market. One of the more popular ones is “Qi,” an inductive charging technology. You have probably seen it in samsung products. It requires you to keep the device that needs to be charged to stay in a fixed location and close to the power source. You wouldn’t need to “plug” but the conditions of using it is not really offering much of change from the regular way of cable charging.  Now with the new products fro wattup and powercast some more promising technologies surface that is called “Rezence,” does “magnetic resonance” charging and allows a greater degree of freedom to you. They can transfer the power to your device from much more distance that the current technology.

With the new technologies you have more freedom on where you can place your devices while being charged. The devices only need to be placed in the near vicinity of the charger not on it or a fixed location but the power of the charger drops by increasing the distance. Powercast that a Pittsburgh-based wireless charging company has unveiled a new FCC-approved power transmitter called a “Powerspot” that now can output up to 3W of power to what may be the longest range for wireless technology so far: 80 feet. WattUp is a wireless charging technology that can charge devices up to 15 feet. But again, the efficiency drops significantly with longer distances. The WattUp technology converts electricity into radio waves in the 5.8GHz band and then the receiver that comes built into devices will capture waves and charge.

  • Powercast is set to show off its PowerSpot transmitter at CES 2018. One PowerSpot transmitter is expected to cost $100 and ship in Q3 2018
  • Energous said that it will demo its technology at the next Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2018), between January 9 and 12, in Las Vegas.
