Unless you’ve been living under a rock or haven’t had wifi for months, you probably know how Microsoft and Nintendo have been trying to promote cross-play, but Sony is doing the exact opposite and trying to get rid of cross-play. The issue got big with Fortnite. When Fortnite came to the Nintendo Switch Microsfot quickly started cross-play between Nintendo Switch and Xbox One. While Sony and Microsoft were trying to promote it, Sony hasn’t been on board. Thanks to Sony, PlayStation players aren’t able to play with the other consoles, and they can’t even use the same account. Right now PC player are able to play Fortnite and then use the same account on the Nintendo Switch to get the same skins but PS 4 gamers aren’t able to do that, and they will have to make a new account to play on the Nintendo Switch. The gaming community has been very mad at Sony for blocking cross-play, but in a recent interview with Eurogamer, Sony said that they are confident that they can make a decision that will make both gamers and their business side happy.
In the interview, the Eurogamer reporter asked Sony’s CEO, Shawn Layden, “I thought it was fascinating you talking about PlayStation 3 flying too close to the sun – your Icarus moment you called it, and then PlayStation 4 coming back to be more back to basics, to be more about the players. But there seems to be an issue at the moment, that Sony isn’t listening to its players – or doesn’t seem to be – and that’s cross-play, Fortnite particularly. And I wondered if there were any plans to open it up? It seems to be Sony’s not listening.”
Layden replied with, “We’re hearing it. We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business.”
It’s unclear why Sony is blocking cross-play on the PS 4. It doesn’t cost them any money and they don’t have to do anything, the gaming community is wondering why Sony doesn’t just unblock cross-play on their console.
