The PlayStation 5 (PS 5) Confirmed by Sony | Rumored to Use 7nm AMD Navi and AMD Ryzen

The PS 5 is Coming Out Sometime Around 2020

Its that time of year again. Rumors have started pouring into the internet about the next-generation of gaming consoles. The PS 5 is going to be Sony’s next-gen console and it will be quite a beast thanks to its AMD Ryzen CPU and 7nm AMD Navi. Thanks to rumors we know that someone at Sony is working with AMD Ryzen technology and that the Sony PlayStation 5 is going to feature 7nm AMD Navi GPUs.

PS 5 to Feature AMD Navi and AMD Ryzen

Thanks to a recent rumor we do know that someone at Sony is doing something with AMD Ryzen technology. 

“A principal programmer at Sony associated with the firm’s Advanced Technology Group is working with AMD’s Ryzen technology, improving the Zen core’s micro-architecture support within the LLVM compiler stack – a key component of a tool used in the PlayStation 4 development environment. Of course, there is no PS4 product using the Ryzen processor, leading to speculation that this is related to a prospective next-gen PlayStation 5 console currently in development.

The evidence – unearthed by Linux-specialist site Phoronix – shows the highly experienced Sony programmer making a number of commits to the LLVM github over the last few weeks, all of them related to the “znver1″ architecture, the codename for AMD’s first generation Ryzen processors. On top of that, information on LinkedIn confirms the staffer’s involvement in compiler development for PlayStation hardware. Game credits in Media Molecule’s Tearaway and Evolution Studios’ DriveClub confirm that the developer is also a part of Sony’s Advanced Technology Group, which serves a number of roles in the Sony organisation.”

Of course, this doesn’t mean that the PS 5 is definitely going to feature AMD Ryzen but it is very promising. If the PS 5 isn’t going to use an AMD Ryzen CPU why would someone at Sony be working with Ryzen technology? Thanks to rumors we also know that the PS 5 is going to feature AMD Navi. If it is going to feature AMD Navi, it’s not clear if it will have Navi 12 or Navi 20. Navi 12 will be the lower-end versions and Navi 20 will be the higher-end versions of AMD Navi. The PS 5 is probably going to feature Navi 12 as Navi 20 will likely be too expensive for a console that costs around $400.
