Bad News for Nvidia RTX | Ray Tracing Shaping Out to Be a Useless Feature That No One Uses
Ray tracing Sacrifices Too Much Performance

Nvidia has recently released a new generation of gaming GPUs, RTX. Nvidia RTX is the first gaming GPU that can run games with real-time ray tracing. You’d think that when a new generation of GPUs are released they perform at least 30% better than last-gen cards around the same price point. Unfortunatly for Nvidia, that is not the case. RTX benchmarks are very disappointing. The Nvidia RTX 2080 performs around 10% better than the GTX 1080TI. Ray tracing seemed like it would be the feature that’ll save Nvidia RTX but according to the latest benchmarks, ray tracing is going to become a gimmick that no one uses.
Nvidia RTX Ray Tracing Benchmarks
You will definitely be disappointed when you see the benchmarks. The Nvidia RTX 2080TI is supposed to be the high-end GPU that plays every game at 4k ultra 60 FPS but, with ray tracing turned on the RTX 2080TI has a hard time running triple-A games at 1080p. In Battlefield V running at 1080p, ultra with ray tracing enabled, the RTX 2080TI ran the game at an average of 58 FPS. With ray tracing disabled the game ran at an average of 138 FPS. At 4k the game is unplayable as it runs at 27 FPS. At 1440p you will have a somewhat decent experience with an average of 44 FPS.
Ray Tracing Shaping Out to be a Useless Feature
You have to wonder, would you rather run your games at 4k 60 FPS or 1080p 60 FPS with ray tracing enabled? Ray tracing doesn’t seem like a very useful feature. If you watch the comparisons, you will notice that Ray Tracing doesn’t make that much of a difference but, 4k makes a big difference. If you compare 4k to 1080p, you will easily notice the difference. In something like GTA V, even an RTX 2080TI might not be able to run it at 1080p with ray tracing enabled at playable frame rates. In GTA V with everything running at ultra settings, even high-end GPUs get brought to their knees.
