Q4 2018 chips stocks: AMD on the rise, Nvidia crashes
Despite losses in the GPU sector for both AMD and Nvidia, the red team managed to see stock appreciation thanks to the CPUs in mainstream, workstations and datacenters. Ryzen was not only the star of 2017, it also gained a lot of attention in 2018. And already leaks are coming out for the next gen and leaks are pointing at a huge deal 12 core CPU, already making the case for AMD in 2019. AMD is expected to further boost the share appreciation with the launch of the Ryzen 3000-series CPUs in the first quarters of 2019.
Nvidia was not that fortunate and took a hard dive in Q3 and Q4, but things should get better once the RTX 2000 GPUs see more adoption in 2019. Last, but not least, Intel virtually flat-lined throughout the entire 2018 because of the 14 nm CPU shortages. Both AMD and Nvidia suffered significant stock depreciation throughout 2018, but AMD’s Ryzen 2000-series CPUs kept the red team afloat despite all the GPU problems. MarketWatch informs that AMD’s stocks were up 79.6% in Q4 2018 and the company even managed to break into the Nasdaq-100 index. Nvidia, on the other hand, did not benefit from its ancillary divisions and the stocks tumbled 54%, making it the worst performing company in the S&P 500 index throughout Q4 2018. As far as Intel is concerned, the 14 nm CPU shortages caused an almost non-existent growth in 2019, as the stocks only went up less than 0.5% throughout 2018.
Is it gonna get worse for Nvidia?
AMD announcement of 7nm technology movement in 2019 is making a buzz all over the chip market both in cpu and gpu platforms. The fact that many datacenter customers of Xion has moved plans to work with AMD in 2019 for the great EPYC platform that AMD introduced in 2018 and upcoming new EPYC rumored to arrive in 2019, makes you think if AMD is attracting CPU customers from Intel why wouldn’t it do it to Nvidia as well. That plus the disappointment RTX series made in gaming market gives AMD a head start in 2019. Just look at the CES AMD is the main speaker and being called the leader of 7nm tech, while Nvidia and Intel have not even released their plans on that platform. If everything goes well with releasing the 7nm platforms expected to be introduced in early 2019, Intel and Nvidia both should fear the consequences.
AMD Navi 7nm Rumored Release Date
Lets start off with the rumored release date. AMD Navi is rumored to be released really soon, probably sometime a month or two after January. AMD has said that they are going to announce Navi at CES 2019 on January 9. AMD usualy releases their hardware a little after they announce them so it is very likely to see Navi around January.
Nvidia’s prospects for 2019 remain quite limited, although the company is actively broadening its focus with A.I.-related technologies.
