Is AMD Vega VII a Big Mistake for AMD? Can’t Outperform Nvidia RTX 2080

Vega VII is Disappointing

Before AMD announced their latest 7nm GPU series, rumors were going around the internet claiming that AMD Navi is going to blow the competition out of the water. Literally, everything that we heard before AMD announced Navi was fake. AMD announced Vega VII at CES 2019 and it didn’t make gamers that excited. AMD said that it is going to be competitive with the Nvidia RTX 2080 and it’s going to cost you $699. AMD has released benchmarks for Radeon VII and its nothing to write home about.

AMD Vega VII VS RTX 2080 Benchmarks

AMD themselves has already revealed how Vega VII is going to perform and its a bit disappointing. All of these benchmarks were run at 4k ultra settings. Although the AMD Vega VII benchmarks are most likely real, there is a small chance that they are a bit inaccurate as these benchmarks were done by AMD, not reviewers.

AMD Vega VII a Big Mistake?

As you saw in the benchmarks above, the Radeon VII can’t outperform the Nvidia RTX 2080 in gaming benchmarks. The AMD Radeon VII is extremely similair to the Nvidia RTX 2080 in terms of gaming performance and price. Considering that the Nvidia RTX 2080 performs and is priced very similarly to the AMD Vega VII, there is no reason for anyone to go with AMD instead of Nvidia.

According to the latest rumors, AMD only has 5000 Vega VII GPUs in stock right now so, you probably wouldn’t be able to pick one up for the MSRP price when it is eventually released. Considering that the RTX 2080 has ray tracing, performs like Vega VII, costs the same, and has no supply issues AMD doesn’t stand much of a chance. Apparently, AMD is losing money on each Vega VII GPU that they make as they are re-purposed Radeon Instinct MI50 cards so, they can’t make a lot of them.
