AMD & Microsoft working on the next gen of cloud gaming console

The two companies are working together on envisioning a future of cloud gaming consoles to rely on cloud-based GPUs to process complex graphics.

In a recent CNBC interview, AMD CEO Lisa Su unveiled that the red team is closely collaborating with Microsoft on a future cloud gaming console. This comes as a confirmation for previous rumors regarding an upcoming “Scarlett” Xbox console that could have two versions: the standard compact box model and a more lightweight version connected to a cloud gaming service.

The Xbox 2 (Scarlett) console has a second version ‘Scarlett Cloud

The newly reported streaming-only version of the Sony PS5 Rival, The Xbox 2 (Scarlett) console has lower compute ability and is set to streams games from what is being referred to as the ‘Scarlett Cloud‘. ‘Scarlett Cloud’ mean that gamers will be able to stream Xbox games on virtually any device with an internet connection. CEO Lisa Su stated that AMD is now partnered with Microsoft “in game consoles,” and thinks the two companies “have a vision of where cloud computing is going.” This new cloud gaming console is rumored to integrate only light processing power, enough for generic tasks like controller input, image signal processing and collision detection (CPU-based tasks mainly), while the geometry and special effects are processed in Microsoft’s cloud through powerful GPUs.

The cloud console will reportedly launch later in the development cycle but both variants should be ready for a 2020 launch. Details about the traditional console is still not known as it is still in an early development phase. The streaming-only console is a lower-power variant that is designed to work well with the company’s game streaming service internally being referred to as the ‘Scarlett Cloud’. Microsoft watcher Brad Sams uncovered the new information related to the next generation of Xbox consoles codenamed ‘Scarlett’.

Possible release dates

Industry analyst and long-time hypothetical mouthpiece Michael Pachter has conducted an interview with GamingBolt, sounding off about his predictions for the next generation of consoles. Pachter, who is an analyst over at Wedbush Securities, believes Microsoft will be next-gen console – supposedly code-named Xbox Scarlett – beating Sony out the gate and getting the drop on the PS5.

“I’m sure Microsoft intends to launch first, and I am equally certain that the new Xbox will be backwards compatible with any Xbox One X software,” Pachter said in the interview.

“I agree that it’s hard for Xbox One X purchasers, but they should know 4 years into a cycle that there is another one coming. My guess is that Microsoft intends to launch in 2020, but if they think Sony is going [to launch the PS5] then, they will launch early.”
