Epic Games CEO Says Microtransactions from Happy Gamers is the Best Funding for a Company
Epic Game’s CEO is Happy by the Way they are Making Money
Since Fortnite is a free to play, you’d think that Fortnite Battle Royal doesn’t make a lot of money as the only way they make money is from microtransactions, but they make a lot, even becoming the top grossing game of May. In May alone, Fortnite Battle Royal made a staggering $318 million, and it became the highest grossing game on consoles. This isn’t from the Save the World, only from players buying V-Bucks. Fortnite isn’t even slowing down; the game’s earning went up 7% from April in May. It seems like Epic’s CEO is happy with the money that Fortnite is making as suggested by what he said in a recent interview with VentureBeat.
Epic Game’s CEO Tim Sweeney said, “As far as the success of Fortnite, that’s the best type of funding a company can get: microtransactions from happy customers. We’re heavily reinvesting, based on Fortnite’s profits, in the underlying game. We’re building our team, adding features, starting a lot of long-term initiatives that will bear fruit in the coming years. We’ve been investing into Fortnite esports. We have competitions, events, and opportunities to win real money. We’ve announced $100 million in prize pool money coming in the next 12 months. This is a great boon for Epic. We have an unlimited ability to invest in our technology, our games, and all the ecosystem around it.”
Fortnite Battle Royal makes a lot of money even though it is a free to play. Gamers are buying millions and millions of Dollars worth of microtransactions every month and the best part is that they are happy as the game is free and it’s not a pay to win. One of Fortnite’s most significant advantages is that it isn’t a pay to win. Usually, free to play games have some sort of a pay to win mechanic that gives players an advantage when they use real money to buy in-game items, but that’s not the case with Fortnite Battle Royal.
