Epic pushing to break traditional Xbox & PlayStation player divide

Epic Games wants to bring cross-play between Xbox One and PS 4 gamers

Fortnite battle royal recently blew up and Epic games has been pushing for cross-play between all platforms IOS, PC, Xbox One, and PS 4. 2017 was a big year for cross-play many companies mostly Microsoft were pushing for cross-play between all platforms so all gamers can play with their friends. Unfortunately for PS 4 gamers that have friends on other platforms, Sony doesn’t like cross-play. Most gamers don’t have a problem with cross-play between all platforms but for an unknown reason, Sony doesn’t like it. Sony has been saying that they don’t want cross-play on the PS 4 to protect children. Epic Games has already accidentally enabled cross-play on the PS 4 but after players figured out what was happening cross-play was quickly turned off.

In an interview with Rolling Stone Epic games CEO Tim Sweeney said that the tradition Xbox and PlayStation player divide should be broken and cross-play is better for gamers. Sweeney said, “I think it’s in everyone’s interest to support interoperability, whatever the history, it’s really in gamers’ interest to play with all of their friends. Gamers who play with their friends spend more and are more engaged.” Cross-platform would be a good thing for both devs and gamers because as Sweeney said players that play with their friends are going to be engaged more in the game especially in a game like Fortnite. Seeney told Rolling Stone, “That traditional divide between PlayStation and Xbox owners doesn’t need to be there.”

Although Sony still doesn’t like cross-platform they are taking baby steps. Both Sony and Microsoft honor Fortnite purchases on other platforms. Microsoft has been trying to get Sony to enable cross-platform but Sony doesn’t budge. If Sony does allow cross-play it would be in their interest as players will be more engaged in games that are better with friends.
