The battle royal genre exists because of PUBG. Before PUBG battle royal wasn’t a real genre but after PUBG blew up and everyone on PC started playing other developers began making battle royal modes or games for other platforms. One of these companies was Epic Games who released Fortnite on the Xbox One and PS 4 much before PUBG was released on the Xbox One. On PC Fortnite runs much better then PUBG, and it doesn’t require a beefy computer to get playable FPS. If you didn’t know a lot of PUBG’s audience is from China. Since PUBG Corp released PUBG in China it has received a massive audience. Fortnite hasn’t been officially available in China. Chinese players are playing PUBG because that’s the only big battle royal game they have access to.
In a recent Tweeted Epic Games wrote, “The Battle Bus is taking off! Destination, China.” It seems like the game is going to be released in China sometime this month. When Fortnite is officially released in China, it will probably succeed and a lot of players will leave PUBG for Fortnite. PUBG Corp has been able to rely on their PUBG audience for a very long time. When Fortnite blew up, PUBG did start losing players as we can see here but Bluehole has been able to rely on the Chinese audience as Fortnite hadn’t been officially released in China. If Epic Games manages to get the Chinese on board PUBG will probably lose thousands of players in a matter of weeks.
Back in November 2017, Bluehole worked with mega Chinese company Tencent to officially release the game in China. In November 2017 Tencent secured the publishing rights to PUBG and released it for the Chinese audience. The Chinese version of PUBG is different than the version available here in North America. Tencent made some adjustments to the game to make it more “suitable” for the Chinese audience.
