Micron Teams Up With Multiple Hardware Partners To Deliver GDDR6 Beyond Graphics
Micron is giving out some details about GDDR6 memory chips, announcing that Micron is now working with ‘multiple hardware partners’ to expand GDDR6 memory technology beyond high end graphic cards.

Micron Teams Up With Multiple Hardware Partners To Deliver GDDR6 Beyond Graphics
While Samsung’s earlier announcement showed us they have started mass production sooner that the main rivals, now Micron has added its new GDDR6 memory chips to its catalog listing. There are three chips, all of which are 8Gb (1GB) and running at 1.35V. The three chips have a speed of 12, 13, and 14Gb/s.
But not only these speeds are significantly lower than the 18Gb/s chips Samsung is releasing, they are also twice as dense at 16Gb (2GB). Significant advantage that samsung has, comes partially from the 10nm production process samsung has, which is much smaller than the 16nm process Micron will use. Samsung is also already in production, while Micron’s memories are still listed as sampling.
Micron’s three hardware IP partners: Rambus, Northwest Logic, and Avery Design are going to expand the market for gddr6. Seeing the potential for the use of GDDR6 outside of GPUs, the three are working to deliver a standalone GDDR6 controller IP. In the silicon design industry, an intellectual property (IP) commonly refers to a third-party, wholly finished hardware design that is licensed or bought and integrated into one’s own chip design. This allows for design reuse and cuts the effort of designing one’s own hardware. Now by creating their controller, Micron’s new partnerships are looking to expand GDDR6 adoption to non-GPU SOCs. Maybe autonomous vehicle systems, that has image processing, and also networking industry.
