Nvidia has been dominating the high-end gaming GPU market for a while now. AMD GPUs haven’t been able to compete with Nvidia’s high-end GPUs in terms of performance but they have had a good amount of competition in the mid-end gaming market. This year, things might change as Nvidia RTX doesn’t perform that much better than last-gen cards around the same price point.

Nvidia RTX Disappointing Benchmarks

Nvidia RTX GPUs are very disappointing to gamers thanks to its lackluster performance. A Nvidia RTX 2080 an $800 gaming GPU, outperforms the Nvidia GTX 1080TI by only 15% in gaming benchmarks while the GTX 1080TI only costs $700. This is the case with every RTX GPU that has been released. All Nvidia RTX GPUs outperform last-gen video cards around the same price point by only 15%. You’d expect to see at least a 30% performance gain between next-gen and last-gen but that’s not the case with Nvidia RTX. This is one of the reasons for RTX being disappointing.

When Nvidia announced RTX a while back, they made a really big deal from real-time ray tracing. Considering that they made such as big deal from it, you’d expect that Nvidia RTX cards will actually be able to run games with ray tracing on at playable frame rates. Battlefield V was released a few weeks ago and gamers quickly performed ray tracing benchmarks. The RTX 2080TI, a 1,200 video card, was able to run Battlefield V with Ray tracing enabled 1080p at an average of 58 FPS. Would you rather run your games at 1080p ultra 60 FPS with ray tracing on or, 4k ultra 70 FPS with ray tracing disabled?

Ray Tracing was supposed to be the technology that saves Nvidia. Although RTX only had a 15% performance gain over last-gen cards, we were hoping that ray tracing would make it worth it but, that is definitely not the case. Right now, there isn’t a reason for anyone to buy RTX over last-gen cards.
