PLAYERUNKNOWN wants PUBG to be a platform that goes beyond battle royal

PUBG’s future seems interesting

PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds was one of the most successful games of 2017. In a matter of months, PUBG went from an indie game to a massive game that sold millions of copies. PUBG did lose a few thousand players in the past two months but it didn’t make a dent as PUBG gets 2+ million players every month. The battle royal genre exists because of PUBG pretty much every battle royal game including Fortnite exists because of PUBG. The creator of the game Brendan Greene also known as PLAYERUNKNOWN did an interview with Eurogamer and he revealed that he wants PUBG to be a platform on which players can make their own battle royal mode or other game modes.

Eurogamer asked Greene “Do you think increasing the breadth of your game with a load of new modes like that is how you stand up next to them  (other battle royal games)?” Greene answered, “Oh for sure. I want Battlegrounds not just to be battle royale I want it to be a great platform for people to create their own games. With our Custom Games server we really want to give fine grain control over what you can control in the game, and do it via UI so it’s almost like modding – I don’t know if we could ever allow full modding because of security and privacy aspects that you have to consider – with “modding light” almost with Custom Games, I really want to be able to give people a platform to create their own spins on battle royale or even other game modes that have nothing to do with battle royale. It’s really just giving them a platform.”

Greene does have a point, no other popular battle royal game has a molding element. In the future, PUBG could become a platform where people not only play normal battle royal games but also costume battle royal matches and even other modes. This could give PUBG a big advantage over other battle royal games such as Fortnite. If PUBG Corp could make costume matches a big deal, players might flood towards PUBG to play costume matches that players made.
