The Mario movie might get canceled
Nintendo has said that they will cancel the Mario movie if they can’t find an interesting topic
2017 was a very good year for Nintendo. The Nintendo Switch sold 10 million units only 9 months after it’s launch and it became the fastest selling console of all time in the USA. The Nintendo Switch also won console and product of the year. Nintendo finally released Zelda Breath of the Wild which got a new perfect score from every reviewer and they released a new Mario game. Super Mario Odyssey was different was the first 3D Mario game in a long time and gamers loved it. It also got a near perfect score from pretty much every reviewer. Companies have been making movies based off of video games for a long time but mostly they weren’t good and got a lot of hate from fans. When Nintendo announced that we are going to see a new Mario movie by Universal and Illumination Entertainment gamers were happy but now in a Q&A with investors, Nintendo has announced that if they can’t find an interesting topic for the movie they are simply going to cancel it.
In the Q&A Miyamoto said, “When I talked with [Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri], he said he had read a lot of interviews with me and felt we had a similar approach to creation. Talking about our similarities, we clicked and decided maybe we should do some kind of collaboration. We started our conversation over two years ago, and finally reached the stage where we could make an announcement. Chris is extremely cost-conscious and time-conscious in his quest to make successful movies, so we decided to try making a movie together.” It sounds like they Illumination was interested in making a Super Mario movie but it wasn’t all happy news. Miyamoto said, “We’ve talked and share the feeling that if we can’t make something interesting, we’ll just call it quits. But we’ve already met a number of times to hash out the screenplay. Our talks together are progressing, and I hope to make an announcement once we’ve ironed out some things, like the schedule” If this movie comes out it has the potential to sell millions of units but if it has a bad topic it won’t sell well and Nintendo will probably lose a lot of money.
