Will the Nvidia RTX 2080 and 2080 TI Even be Able to Run Games at 4K with Ray Tracing? Will Ray Tracing be a feature that no one uses?

How will Ray Tracing Affect Game Performance

Right now according to the latest benchmarks, Nvidia RTX is barely an improvement over the last-gen GPUs. Nvidia RTX hasn’t been doing too well amongst gamers as it’s been described as one of the most disappointing Nvidia GPU series.. RTX has already cost Nvidia a lot of money. Morgan Stanley called Nvidia RTX disappointing making Nvidia drop by 1.4% and noted that the RTX 2080 performs only 3% better than the GTX 1080 TI. We haven’t seen any ray tracing benchmarks yet but one has to wonder, will Nvidia RTX run games at a playable FPS at 4K with ray tracing enable?

The Benchmarks

The Nvidia RTX 2080 isn’t doing too well as reflected by the latest benchmarks. With Shadow of the Tomb Raider running at 4k ultra, the RTX 2080 ran the game at 47 FPS and the RTX 2080 TI ran it at 59 FPS. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is one of the worst games benchmarked, FPS games such as Battlefield 1 do better. According to the benchmarks, the RTX 2080 ran Battlefield 1 4k ultra at an average of 72 FPS and the RTX 2080 Ti ran it at an average of 89 FPS. Although the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 TI do well in these games, they will likely struggle with future games.

Will it be able to run Games at 4k with Ray Tracing on?

Ray Tracing definitely requires a lot of power to run. To increase performance, Dice toned down ray tracing on Battlefield V in their demo at Nvidia’s presentation. This is bad news as it means Nvidia RTX can’t run a game like Battlefield 1 at 4K ultra with ray tracing enabled. Of course, gamers are going to be able to turn down the resolution to 1080p. Right now, we don’t really know how ray tracing looks so, you have to wonder if it will be worth it to turn down the resolution to something like 1440p from 4k.4K looks absolutely amazing when compared to 1440p so ray tracing has to make games really beautiful if Nvidia wants gamers to use it.

If ray tracing isn’t worth it, RTX wouldn’t really be worth it. Ray tracing is the most important feature of Nvidia RTX GPUs.
