Samsung has and SK Hynix and Micron have been working on next gen memory technologies over the last year and now samsung is about to start mass produce GDDR6 memory chips. Samsung’s 16Gb (2GB) chips are made on 10nm process and run at 1.35V. The new chips have a 18Gb/s pin speed and transfer rate of 72GB/s. Samsung’s current 8Gb (1GB) GDDR5 memory chips work at 1.55V with up to 9Gb/s pin speeds.
SK Hynix released details of its GDDR6 chips about half a year ago and Micron said its chips marked this year for production. SK Hynix’s first GDDR6 chip is set to be 8Gb, 16Gb/s chip that also runs at 1.35V. Micron never detailed a specifics but mentioned that it starts at 12Gb/s, about the same speed as its current fastest GDDR5X chips, before reaching 16Gb/s.
Nvidia Volta it thought to have GDDR6. Micron and Samsung have been key partners in providing NVIDIA with DRAM offerings. NVIDIA remains to be the only one who utilized their G5X memory standard and may continue Volta and GDDR6. Samsung’s HBM2 technology was a key enabler for Volta-based Tesla V100 GPUs which started shipping to customers in the previous quarter. Tesla V100 is used on servers is called by Nvidia as the most powerful graphic architecture ever made.
Samsung 16Gb GDDR6 Memory – The fastest and lowest-power DRAM for next generation, graphics-intensive applications. It processes images and video at 16Gbps with 64GB/s data I/O bandwidth, which is equivalent to transferring approximately 12 full-HD DVDs (5GB equivalent) per second. The new DRAM can operate at 1.35 volts, offering further advantages over today’s graphics memory that uses 1.5V at only 8Gbps. via Samsung
