Pico Technology is bringing to the VR industry the first self-contained, 6-degree of freedom (6DoF) VR headset with 6DoF motion controllers. The Pico Neo CV has a room-scale VR experience without any external cameras or a host computer. At CES 2017, Pico Neo CV Technology was revealed. the Pico Neo CV and said that the hardware would hit the market within the year 2017. Pico didn’t live up to its 2017 release dates and plans, maybe because after CES they redesigned the headset, the controllers, and the tracking technology.

The Neo CV headset at CES featured two 90Hz “1.5K displays,” along with integrated speakers with AM3D 3D spatial audio technology and internal gyro + rotational sensors. The headset  spatial tracking was made by external cameras. The previous Neo CV design also included a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC and Pico said that it used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon VR SDK to maximize the performance. The Pico Neo CV also has 4GB of “high-speed” RAM, No confirmation for headset internal storage, but it accepts up to 128GB SD cards. The headset screens are two 3.5″ 1440×1600 pixel LCDs that operate at 90Hz.

The new controllers added to the headset has internal 6DoF tracking, with no need for cameras of any kind. Pico’s motion controller uses “ultra-sonics” to determine the device’s orientation and location in relation to the headset. Pico didn’t go into detail about how the motion controller’s ultra-sonic technology works, but more details are going to come out of Pico at CES 2018. It is probably going to be ready to be shipped early 2018 and Pico has put a price tag of $749 for the headset, and it’s currently accepting pre-orders from business customers, but it’s not ready to take orders from general consumers.
