Possible Chipset For Ryzen 2 12nm, The AMD 400 Chipset Seen In Documents

AMD 400-Series Chipset Have Been Seen In PCI-SIG Documents List | AMD has already shown in its road maps and earlier conferences about switching from 14nm LPP to GlobalFoundries’ 12nm LP process, so new processors are probably going to be out in 2018. The new AMD CPUs are called Ryzen 2 or Ryzen refresh with 12nm technology. Now there are signs found in new documents that the AMD will also bring a new chipset to market as well along with the new processors made by 12nm and it is called 400 series chipset.

AMD has a new AMD 400 Series Chipset listed on the PCI-SIG website. (The PCI-SIG Compliance Program tests products and ensures interoperability with the PCIe interface.) The listing includes the “Promontory 400 Series”. AMD’s 400 Series Chipset Root Complex is also listed separately on the Integrators List. Notably, this new root complex features the PCIe 3.0 interface. We will probably see improvements to PCIe 3.0 for the future 400 Series chipset, and it is also useful to mention that it will not come with PCIe 4.0 based on the documents. Of course AMD has promised before to support the AM4 platform and motherboards and Socket 1331 until 2020, barring the introduction of DDR5 or PCIe 4.0. That means these chipsets should be pin-compatible with the existing Ryzen processors. The older AM4 motherboards are believed to be able to support the new Ryzen 2 (refresh) CPUs by just a BIOS update.

The new AMD 400 chipset is mainly to bring the maximum productivity and support for the next generation of CPUs and the technologies that comes with it. The AM4 will continue to be supported and so the next AMD Ryzen CPU users could update the CPU without changing any other PC parts.
